Games Workshop "Big Reveals" 2022
The first big preview of 2022 has come and left. What do I think about it?
I have to say that I am not impressed. Don’t get me wrong. Most of the models that was previewed was nice sculpts without a doubt. If you collect Eldar this preview must be very exciting. Same can be said for AoS and both individual factions.
The only thing that stood out for me was the Horus Heresy demon and the Necromunda teaser.
The demon looks great…even if the preview photos initial leaved me wondering if the wings was put on properly? After reviewing the preview trailer for the model, it seems like some photos have weird angels so all should be good. Love the model, however, I will never be able to afford it.
Horus heresy apparently have a new logo as well that was not addressed or talked about. That is a missed opportunity in my opinion. You could simply have addressed it and said that “more will be revealed down the line, but big things are waiting for fans of Horus Heresy”. That would spark excitement in the HH community for sure and maybe would that stile some of the more hostile voices. But maybe nothing is on its way for HH so that’s why nothing was said. Other than that Horus Heresy could just as well have been left out of the preview all together. It was nice that it was included but it could just have been a simple Warhammer-community article. Demons is part of HH narrative, but HH is about the legions and the fall of the empire that is why we are here. Demons is cool and a part of the story, but not the focal point of the game…that’s my opinion any ways.
For Necromunda I got very exited for the mention of the ash waste and talks about vehicles. This would be a great move if it is implemented in a good way. MAD MAX, inq28, sci-fi wild west, borderlands and so on comes to mind. Giving great opportunity for new ways of exploring themes and world building. But we basically only got a trailer and some mentions. If you only look at the trailer it is very unclear what this is. I think we can see Orlock and something new. Only if you listen to what is talked about after the trailer it is getting a little more interesting. So, I got very excited, but I am not sure for what or for when. Nothing was really shown and that leads me to believe it is far out yet. So, maybe I should holster my excitement. There might be tons of easter eggs in the trailer but nothing obvious to me.
And oh, there was something about killteam. I don’t play it but even if I did, I don’t think I would have been exited for its preview.
So, I will give this preview a 4/10. Some great models. Sparks of excitement but I don’t feel any hype bubbling under my skin. I feel more irritated to be honest.
This is the first big preview of 2022. This is where GW could set the foundation for the year to come. This is shown at the same time as LVO is going on. GW could have talked about road maps and intentions. What is the over all plan for 2022. Where is the Old world and why would we care about GW and their games? What can we look forward to and what can we expect? What I take from this is that we can pretty much expect exactly the same stuff and approach to things as we have come to know from GW since “new GW” came around. And that might be good news for some. Maybe that is what the majority of the community wants. But that is not enough for me.
GW have been around for 40+ years. They have tons of content to draw from. Last year and the year before that, they made shitloads of money…but still we only get more of the same? Where are the innovative supplements for 40k? Why not adding alternating activations in a suppliment to the game as an option? Where are supplements for city fight and tank battles? Why can’t I use the flyers from Aeronautica Imperialis in my Titanicus games yet? Why isn’t all codexes out for 40k? So on and so forth. There is so much that GW could make and create that would make me go and buy more plastic than what I can paint. But if you weren’t involved in the current games before, this preview will not change anything.
Sorry if anyone don’t agree with me or if I take away the thunder from anyone. I wish the best for GW, I really do. And if you enjoy all from GW don’t let me discourage you. But I feel that these types of lukewarm previews will hurt GW more down the line then paving the way for a good year of sales. 40k don’t feel like a living game to me, more like something that is in constant flux and this is suppose to be the money-maker for GW, that says more about all other games under GW than about 40K.
