KUGGKÖPING, My Own Game
Anyone that have followed my blog have probably noticed that I have been working on my own game.
This is nothing serious to be honest. Or…well I do take it seriously. I love the process and I enjoy the game. But I don’t have any bigger ambitions than creating something for my own enjoyment.
The game has gone through a lot of changes lately and I have to say, I really really enjoy it now.
The biggest issue that I have faced during the “development” is falling in love with the initial creation only to get bored by it moments later. To make something from your own ideas and see it work, really mess with your judgment, you kind of always love your own inventions I guess.
The trick I found is to let the game sit for a couple of weeks and then see it with new eyes. This have helped me to identify a lot of issues with the game.
Some of the game mechanics which I have faced most difficulties with have been the enemy’s activation. How to make a solo game engaging in all a phase, how to add a sense of choice and decision making where you normally would have a friend challenge your tactics. I mean, how can I replace a good friend and a sharp mind with a game mechanic? But I think that I have solved it, at least it is way more engaging than before, and it actually feels like a nice part of the game rather than a chore that needs to be done. It certainly doesn’t replace a good friend, but the absence of one is less profound.
Honestly, there is something strange about enjoying a tabletop miniature game all alone. Solving a difficult situation and win the mission only to celebrate without anyone there to cheer you on.
So no, this game won’t replace anyone, but dare I say, it comes very close to it. Yes, I am biased, and it is very subjective. But this is how I feel about it.
There have been times where I am explaining to my spouse about this awesome game I had and how it all came down to the final dice roll. Only to be meet with rolling eyes and a pat on the head, haha. A grown man, locked in his hobby dungeon playing with his toy soldiers… it is almost sad when I think about it…if it wasn’t for the fact that I have a great time in my own company, so I guess it is her loss for not joining me 😉.
Now, the game is far from done and far from perfect. But if you are curious about it you can download it for yourself and try it out.
I also have to say that the miniatures from the skirmish games Moonstone (Goblin King Games) and Malifaux (Wyrd Games) works perfectly with Kuggköping. I have no connections to any of the companies or the games (other than being a fan). But I think both are doing a great line of models. I got the start box for Moonstone a while back. I love the style and the concept. Sadly, I have not been able to try it yet. But maybe 2022 will be the year. I sincerely hope so!
