Horus Heresy. Marauder squad continued. Part 1.

So the last four marauders are on the painting tabel. Well the last four for the first squad that is. I got a question the other day of how I painted my reaver lord. There is no great trick to it or any great secret. So I thought I could share the recipe here on the blog. Maybe it can inspire someone. 

First step is to paint the model black. I do this with a black spray but you can easily just do it with a paint brush. After that I dry brush the model with a light silver. There are many ways to dry brush something. But the best way I have found is to dry brush first in one direction and then go over it again in an intersecting direction. That way you end up with a nice criss-cross pattern. Next step is to sponge light silver on the model. I know some guys don’t like this method. But I think it is a nice easy way to give some open areas some texture. Last step for today is to wash the whole model in any black wash. Idea is to dull it down a bit. You might need to do this one or two times to get the preferred darkness on the surfaces.

Tomorrow we will add some contrast color and try to dirty the model up a bit.

So here we are. The terminators are done and finished. Next up will be the rest of the marauder squad. I will also see if I have parts for a second marauder squad as well. Having a good time converting things up :) .

Just a couple of small things to do on the terminators and then we will call it. I really like the look and feel of these models. I am planning on getting my hands on five more terminators of some kind and make this squad ten strong. And in time maybe a Spartan to transport them. The most fun with this project is the converting aspect. So I will start look around for parts for the other five. I think I will base them on Cataphractii but I don’t want them to be plain Cataphractii. I will try to mix armor pieces and/or marks with some other random elements. 

Super fun project I have started here I must be honest. Let’s see how long I will keep this up. It is the usual story with me. I get super exited on one project and work heavily on it until I run out of steam. Then I pause and continue with something els for a while. I don’t mind working like that, but maybe it can look a little chaotic from the outside. At least my blog won’t be the same old thing over and over again. You, just like me, never know what will show up the next day ;)

After the rapier teams I wanted to continue with the black shield terminators. So i have made some small progress on them. I think they can look pretty cool when they are finished.

Finaly done :) . Yesterday was a busy busy day and time was not there for hobby work. But today things are a litte less busy and I managed to finish my rapier teams.

The rapier crew is more or less done. I just need to take a proper picture of them. But sometimes things come in the way. You shift focus and get inspiration in another direction. I should be finishing the rapier crew and the marauder squad but this is a hobby and one of my passions so I dont mind if I side tracks from time to time. 

I got an Idea for a black shield terminator squad and i wanted to test it. I will paint it up and add them to the force but thay may be replaced down the line if it dont turn out the way I pictured it. The black shields I am making is going to have alot of conversions. I want the force to be very original and visually intresting. Hopfully I can make that happen :) .

Dirt have been applied and the bases are cooking. Now I am close to the finish line, very close. My bases are really really simpel but i think it looks good even if that is the case. Glue on gravel, spray black, dry brush citadell XV88, done. 

Future plans and baby sabotage.

Having a young daughter is some of the best things that have happened to me. Even if you occasionally have hard times as a parent. Like the past nights when my baby girl just won’t sleep and are keeping her parents up through the night. The constant crying have left a ringing in my ear. However, this is small things to pay compared to all the love I feel for her and how much happiness she gives me every day. But the consequences of nights like this is that daddy just can’t find the energy to sit down with his little plastic men. Now I have more or less been working on something every day for one years’ time. I think I can take the day off considering. Right? I do have vacation as well so I will give myself a pass.

But when I can’t paint or build stuff I plan and think of future stuff and I thought I could share some of my future plans with the world.

I have been making a lot of progress on my Iron warriors. A lot of units have been made and tested and slowly I have solidified an idea of how I want my legion to run. But when I take a look at all of my stuff I see a half made legion. Plans I have had before was to get the iron circle, more havocs, a Spartan, big walkers and more cool tanks. Now if would get all of the things I want to get I would not come any closer to making my legion “whole” or complete. So I have decided to start working on my legion with the goal of finishing it. Now this sounds like I will sell it or stop playing with it once I reached my goal. That’s not going to happen. But I want to focus on making the army whole before I start buying more cool units. One of the things that did set these thoughts off was my resent plans of continuing on my mechanicum force. The mechanicum force will absolutely happen but every time I start making plans for it I look at my Iron warriors and feel like I am leaving something un finished and un done. So instead of having two armies that is half finished I will try to finish one of them at a time.

So what do I feel would finish my iron warriors then? Well a close look at my army and I can see that I do lack vehicles and specially transports. Right now my legion walks on to the board and walks off. Now I don’t have a problem with this when it comes to the tactical squads for example. But terminators and breachers on the other hand seems more awkward to just footslog forward. So first thing will be to address this problem and that will mean I need to add land raiders and maybe some rhinos. Now I don’t really like rhinos. I don’t know what it is but I can’t imagen me siting down and making three of them. I become bored just thinking of it. But this is something I need to do. I need rhinos in some of my lists and some of the game benefits is just too good to say no to. So I will start here. Time to mount up! I have more ideas like adding one more predator to finish the squad. Maybe something really dedicated to take on super heavys. I also have one unfinished medusa still not painted up and that one will need a partner. Yeah stuff like that. How long this will take I have no idea. And will I be able to keep my path straight? I doubt it. But I will try to finish my legion so I can feel ready to move on again. So first step will be the rapier crew. This is the week they will be finished!

Hazard stripes is more or less done. Might go back and clean up some of them after the next step. And the next step will be dirt and dust. Not long now before all the crew members are done :) .

Almost done. Just some hazard stripes, dust and the bases. Soon I can start on some new projects. I have the black shields to do but I might do something els before that. We will see what i feel for when the time comes :) .

So when you have vacation you should read books right. And I do have vacation at the moment so I went and accuired some books to do some reading with :) . Hopefully this will lead to some gaming as well.

The rapier crew are getting there. Next part is to put color on all the small leather pouches and then put wash on the blocked out details. It is nice to see it all coming together.

So this did finaly find its way to my doorstep :) . Awesome quality, you almost dont want to open it . Now i have not have had time to sit down with it yet. But I hold my fingers for tonight. I am thinking of give my view of the highlights from the book. Now i wont do a review, there is plenty of reviews out there. But more a list of things that is making me excited now when the changes is out :) .

Washing of the models are done and a thin layer of silver have been applied on the top surfaces. Next step will be to block out black, gold, brown and red.

Got alot of work done on the rapier crew. Even did try a new way of base coat them. Started cover to models with black spray. And when that dryed I added a thin layer of silver spray. The end result looks really nice. Next step will be to wash them all and then block out details.

I am now considering all the  rapiers to be done for now. I think all of them turned out ok. I am also very happy that I can swap weapons on the rapier platforms. Time to move on with the rapier crew.

I think I am done with the quad mortars for now. As always I have the option to come back if I want to take the models further. Time to continue with the laser destroyers.

The rapiers are coming along but I still have a long road ahead of me before all six is done. I kind of like the quad mortars now when I gave them the “quad” appearance. Hopefully I will finish the rapiers during the weekend and start with the rapier crews next week. It would be nice to finish it all so I can move forward with some other stuff.
