Horus Heresy. Word Bearers. Rhinos. Part 2.
Got some more work done on the rhinos. I like how they are coming along. Will look nice together with the rest of the force.

I think I have tried 8th edition enough so I can give my final verdict.
And my opinion have sadly not changed from my first game.
There are a lot of good things in 8th. The core rules seem fine to me except for some of the vehicle rules that I feel are to simplify. But that is more a question of taste.
I have more or less been running a very standard space marine list. Some tactical squads in rhinos. Land raider and terminators. Predators or other heavy guns at the back and buffing HQs to give added value for the units in the army. Taking and equipping units for specific tasks and then trying to apply whatever tactics I can muster. Focusing on competent builds with as many command points as I can get.
I never expected to win any of the games. It is after all a very generic space marine list and you can face a lot of stronger builds out there. But I did however expect to do something. Get a good game or two and maybe even challenge some of my opponents.
The best game I had was against ad mech. I got tabeled turn 3. After taking out one knight and a handful of skitarii.
In all games I have played the humble space marine preform poorly against anything I have faced. Power armor don't seem to hold up. Bolters have a hard time to kill anything and the list just seem to have a lot of deadweight in it.
The thing is this. In most games I have scored a lot of objectives and have been in the lead from the start. But all the points in the world can't win me the game if my army gets blown of the table turn 2-3 .
Now I might just have had bad matchups...but then again I was under the impression that bad matchups was a thing of the past. 40k was supposed to be super balanced and play tested. The sad thing is that I have not even faced any broken or abused list with my army. Well okey I faced one list that was broken as hell. But we are not talking about that game any more. But for the most part I faced very generic lists with a little of everything. But no matter what I did I was out gunned from the start. With less power to punch back with from the start it was pretty set to begin with. In every game!
And yes, of course, if I had replaced the ordinary space marines with the cool new primaries and changed some of my HQ for Gulliman or some other power house leader. Replaced some of my heavy guns for big fliers or the awesome new toys just released from GW, the outcome might have been different.
Remember what I said in the beginning. I did not expect to win but to put up a good fight. That's what's really are the problem. I just don't own anything that can bring that level of punch to the gaming table. Half of the index and sadly all the stuff that I own can easily be thrown out of the book. And what would be left are a competent number of units that would be competitive enough to make a handful of fun and powerful lists.
So I feel a little sad to be honest. As it feels right now, if I want to play 40k and have a "good time" I need to invest in an all new army. Even if I just are going to play space marines that I already own tons of. I just don't own the "right" units.
I would normally not react like this to be honest. I never take things to seriously and I still love my painted toy soldiers even if all will sit on the shelf for the rest of my life. I am not a rage quitter.
But it was all this talk from GW that fueled me up. Infantry are valid again. Everything can die. Everything will die. Both army's will only have a handful of models left on the board. Every turn will be brutal for both opponents. Exiting. Best edition ever. 40k are back etc. But from were I am sitting everything that have been said is a straight up lie. What is true is: "buy the new stuff to this new edition and you will enjoy an awesome game". Now that have been the case for 40k for as long as I can remember. So why I get surprised now is beyond me.
I feel that this is turning out to be a straight up rant and I don't want to go down that road.
I will just acknowledge that 40k changed and that is a good thing. It changed in a direction were some army's are awesome and some army's are less awesome. This time it is my turn to feel the cold hand and enjoy a little less glorious army and that is okay. I can always start a new army and join the fun and I don't need to be a big baby about it... Or I can just stick to 30k and all the other games I have and are enjoying and let 40k be for the time being.
So yeah I don't review the game that high from my point of view. But that's just my opinion and I would encourage everyone to try it out. Most people I talk to are really enjoying it and I am happy for that. It will mean that GW will make a lot of money and we will see even more spectacular models in the future. 40k is the classic and should be king of the hill even if I don't play it.
I will however follow the new edition closely. A lot can happen and this is just the beginning. In one year the landscape of 40k might look a lot different.
Let's hope it dose, for me and my small plastic dudes.
Currently I have vaccination so hobby progress are slowed down a little. But I am making some progress on two rhinos that will feature in the next step of our escalation campaign. Want theses to look like they came directly from calth. So dirty and weathered :) .
So, i played my second game of warhammer 40k 8th edition.
I dont really know what to say. Again i had a great time playing with a friend. But the game it self did not add to the enjoyable parts of my game night.
This are some of the thing that i hear from most gamers.
8th have:
Great balance.
Feel more cinematic .
More deadly.
Everything dies.
Infantry is back.
Tanks are playabel.
What bothers me is that i feel the opposite. It is weird. It is like i am playing a different game from everyone els. I came to the gaming table without any expectation and leaves with a feeling of sadness . I am really really trying to like this game. Most players i talk to are so happy about the changes and here i am being that guy that don't get it.
The basic rules are fine. Alot is great, it runs fast and smooth but something is missing for me. Just those extra small rules would take this game a long way.
I dont want this to turn in to a rant simply because thats not me. I have always been the that guy that says "if you don't like it, stop cry about it and play something else".
The only reason why I am still trying is because I love 40k. It is the reason I started with miniature war games to begin with.
So, I will try 8th for a third time. This time I will take an army list built with love. We will also try power levels. This is a feature that I really like.
So my hopes are that with this third game I will be all in on the new edition. Or I just have to accept that 8th is noting for me and go and play another game.
bammm Done :) . Took some time but now them are ready for action :D .
High time to finish these guys. Nothing more to say but, iron within iron without.
Here are my Word bearers preator. Finished him at last :) . Cool dude that just sits on his thrown. Built him from one of the objectivs in the space hulk board game box. Cant wait to put him on the table.
So, i have played my first game of 8th. 1000p of iron warriors faced the mechanicus in an kill point game.
I cant really give a honest review of the game yet. But one thing stand out to me.
I had fun and had a good time, all in all. But i dont really feel that i want to go back and play once more. The game was fast, tactical and bloody. But it did not feel like i was part of it somehow.
War games for me are more then roll dice. You are part of the squads, you see gun fire, hear the roar of the battle cannons. From the first die roll you are part of the battle, like the commander you are suppose to be. But in 8th i just feelt like was playing any game in general. The army are on the table and i am at the side of it and the actions it takes.
It was still fun but it did not leave me with wanting more. What i think breaks it for me are small small things, but that have big impacts. Like my predator that are more or less right behind a big wall. One small part of my hull sticks out and now i can fire all my guns at anything in range. Or that the same predator that got charged, cant unload all the guns at the small dudes he are backing away from. From a game stand point it works. Allow for tactics and hard dicisions. But it makes no sens at all and yous feels stupid to be honest. The tank dont feel like a tank.
Now, i wont judge the game to hard. I have played one game with 1000p . I will try it once more with more points and a different army and see if i cant get "that feeling" once again playing 40k. But i think that GW have cut of to much this time. This might change in the future of corse.
But again, i need to try it once more before i can give my full review.
The past week i have been working on everything and nothing so i dont really have anything to show. But i am working on my blackshields again. More on them later. I made a Word bearer preator as well that i need to take som pictures of. But right now i have the iron circle on my table and i am super excited to finaly start working on them :D .
So, another castellax unit is finished :) . Slowly my mechanicum force are growing.
Done and finished! Not much more to add then the picture of them ;) . It is one of these units that i just needed to have in my army. Will be fun to try them on the table top.
slow progress on my hobby projects. But as long as things move forward :) .
After a long period of being sick i finally got back to my painting table. I have so much fun stuff to do :D .
And with warhammer 40k 8th around the corner i have some small stuff i want to do for that game as well.
I need to deciede what i will run with in 8th. I am thinking of going with either iron warriors (of corse) or silver skulls. We will see . But it is nice to be up on my two feet again.
Done with the twenty new recruits. Ready to fold in to the lines and spread the word.
Some more progress have been made. Love when i have a ton of models on the tabel or ten of them. It is a awesome feeling when it starts to come togheter :) .
Yes i jump alot between projects :) . I got a deal on 20 marines some time back and now it is time to re-paint them. Planing to expand the 2 squads i already have. Time to go big :) .
I gott these puppys and am almost done building them. Now i have magnitized the shields and the guns for one simpel resson. I want to use my big robots as normal domitars as well, with my mechanicum. So add a launcher and a home made grav hammer should not be to much work. To be continued.
Here we go. I had some luck yesterday and got the evening opend for hobby and fun. So i sat down and finished my castellax. I like the result. First time i tryed to paint white. If we can say its still white. Off i go forward new projects.
Progress have been made! But alot left to do :) .
So with warhammer 40k 8th edition around the corner and with the latest news that horus heresy will follow soon after. I have to say that i am excited. I know that alot of folks are worrid about the changes. But to be hones, i know everything is going to be alright. With that said i will, keep calm and make some castellax :) .
